  • ABSTRACT

The performance characteristics of a broadband dual-beam echo sounder operating over the frequency range of 110- 200 kHz were investigated. The system sensitivities of the broadband dual-beam echo sounder were estimated for the narrow- and wide-beam channels using a 22 mm tungsten carbide sphere (WC22). Echo signals from the WC22 sphere generated by a chirp pulse transmitted from the narrow-beam transducer were simultaneously received by the narrow- and wide-beam channels. The frequency-dependent beam-pattern factor was removed from the narrow-beam output using the estimated system sensitivities of the two channels. The validity of the broadband dual-beam echo sounder was evaluated using a 38 mm tungsten carbide sphere (WC38), and difference between the simulated (-39.33 dB) and measured (-40.19 dB) TS values of the WC38 sphere was 0.86 dB. These results, indicate that the chirp data acquisition and processing system developed in this study provides sufficiently reliable target strength estimation accuracy when used as a broadband dual-beam echo sounder system, compared with that of a conventional split-beam echosounder.
