  • ABSTRACT

Simulations and model tests were conducted to evaluate the maneuverability of the training vessel Saedongbaek. As the first training vessel to comply with the special purpose ship code, it was equipped with a controllable pitch propeller and a flap rudder to enhance maneuvering performance. The Shipgen simulation results were compared with model tests conducted at the Swedish State Shipbuilding Experimental Establishment. In particular, turning and zigzag tests were performed under both one-pump and two-pump operating conditions of the steering gear hydraulic system. The results demonstrated that the two-pump condition provided better maneuverability, with a smaller tactical diameter and shorter advance. Similarly, the zig-zag tests indicated faster and more accurate steering responses under two-pump conditions. In all cases, the starboard tactical diameter was larger than that of the port side, suggesting better turning performance toward port. Although the vessel is <100 m and is not strictly subject to IMO standards, it still satisfied most criteria, with the two-pump condition meeting all requirements. Furthermore, the simulation and model test results exhibited similar trends, confirming the reliability of the analysis.
