  • ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the sanitary condition of short-necked clam (Ruditapes philippinarum) growing areas on the central west coast of Korea from January 2023 to December 2025. The seawater quality at all 15 stations located on major short-necked clam beds met the Korean criteria for designated areas. However, the bacteriological quality of short-necked clams varied widely among stations; under the European Union (EU) regulation, only four stations were classified as Class A, and the remaining 11 were classified as Class B. These findings contrast with the favorable sanitary conditions observed in the seawater. The results also indicate that areas with chronic mild contamination (Escherichia coli exceeding 230 most probable number (MPN)/100 g) and those with extreme contamination (E. coli exceeding 700 MPN/100 g) require distinct shellfish depuration and sanitary management strategies. Heavy metal concentrations in short-necked clams at all stations were well below the EU regulatory limits; however, the accumulation trend observed at specific stations (S18 and C17) has important implications for proactive management.
